Deforestation
For our final project of this really fun year, we created a solution to a world problem. The task was to use biotechnology to solve a current issue in the world. Our teacher Ms. Matthews who is really amazing created steps for us to follow to develop a solution. Step 1 was to go through and come up with different categories that interested us. Then, in step 2 we chose three problems and researched them. Step 3 was to pick one of the three problems and doing more research on it. In step 4 we brainstormed three different solutions for our issue. Step 5 was choosing the solution and researching how to make it happen. Step six was to create a presentation as if we were presenting the solution to a company or government group. Our group chose a very prevalent issue of deforestation.
Why We Care
Deforestation is killing and injuring thousands of species and ecosystems worldwide. Trees are a very important part of our world. They create oxygen which is very vital part of our survival as humans. We need oxygen to survive.
Content
-Deforestation: the removal of a forest or mass area of trees from land which is then converted to a non-forest use. Our project goal is to prevent deforestation.
-PXY-CLE- Genes located in plant DNA that is responsible for the rate and amount of cell replication, therefore responsible for the bigger and faster trees grow.
-Cell Division: The division of a cell into two daughter cells with the same genetic material.
-Greenhouse Gases: a gas that absorbs and emits radiant energy within the thermal infrared range. Green house gasses can be caused by the deforestation of trees
-Genetic Modification: The direct manipulation of an organism's genes using biotechnology. The solution of our project was using genetically modified trees that grew bigger and faster than regular trees
-Gene Gun: In genetic engineering a "gun" that shoots a protein into certain parts of the cell/ DNA strand. We will use this with the modification of the PXY-CLE genes.

Relection
This project was very fun. This was probably my favorite project. Our group of Daniel, Ty, and I work really well. We all like to get our work done fast and good quality so we can relax. Our time management was very good for the most part. I believe that this project I showed a lot of leadership. When my group members were on their phone a lot, I had to push them to work instead of going on their phones. I also found my self to relax when I finish my work. Our group worked well for this group and we all feel that we gave it our all. We worked really hard on this project. We also picked a topic that we all felt was important in our lives. This was a really fun project to end this amazing year on. I would like to thank my teacher Ms. Matthews for making learning fun and having material that taught me and coming up with fun ways to teach us this stuff. This was a really good and fun year.
